Game changer GLP-1 agonist drugs
The launch of GLP-1 agonist drugs, for the management of obesity (overweight condition) and type-2 diabetes is historic. GLP-1 stands for glucagon like peptide-1, which is a hormone (chemical messenger) produced mainly in the lower portion of intestine particularly when a person consumes food. GLP-1 hormone is also produced in the brain and pancreas. GLP-1 stimulates insulin release to lower the blood glucose level (incretin-like action), GLP-1 also reduces glucagon hormone release (glucagon tends to increase the blood glucose level), and finally, GLP-1 hormone decreases appetite and creates a sense of fullness. GLP-1 agonist drugs mimic the effects of GLP-1. Examples of GLP-1 agonist drugs are semaglutide (Wegovy, Rybelsus and Ozempic), tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound) and liraglutide (Victoza and Saxenda).
