What You Need to Know

- Dr. Hareesh K V Abhishek Nethradhama

Can Ptosis Go Away on Its Own? What You Need to Know

Ptosis can affect both appearance and vision, but effective treatments are available. If you or your child experience eyelid drooping, consult a doctor to determine the best course of action.

Ptosis (pronounced TOE-sis) is a medical condition characterized by the drooping of the upper eyelid, which can partially or completely cover the eye. It can affect one or both eyes and may occur in children (congenital ptosis) or adults (acquired ptosis). While ptosis is often a cosmetic concern, severe cases can impair vision and require medical intervention.

Causes

1. Congenital Ptosis

  • Present at birth due to improper development of the levator muscle (the muscle responsible for lifting the eyelid).

  • May be associated with other eye conditions like strabismus (misaligned eyes) or amblyopia (lazy eye).

2. Acquired Ptosis

  • Age-related (Involutional Ptosis): The levator muscle stretches or weakens with age.

  • Neurological Causes: Conditions like Horner's syndrome or third nerve palsy.
