Attacks on Doctors

Health Vision

|

September 2023

For decades we have been reading a great line “Vaidyo Narayana Hari” meaning Doctors are known to be equal to god. In mythology too Lord Shiva is also referred as Vaidya Natheshwara, for being the first surgeon in the universe to operate his son lord Ganesha. Five-thousand-year-old Indian medical system Ayurveda also has two great names Dhanvantari for medicine and Sushrusha for surgery.

Attacks on Doctors

We often respectfully mention many great names like Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, and Dr. William Osler a very intelligent doctor for their very radical approach towards administration of medicines and mitigating medicinal side effects.

While public in large respects and thank doctors for saving their lives, many a times however, it’s also a common phenomenon that Doctors are cursed, abused and attacked when there is an alleged procedural lapse or an error by a Doctor in a hospital. Though Medical profession is very respectable one and often considered as a profession having a tag of savior of lives, many incidents of attack on doctors is repeatedly occurring. There are several cases where Medical Establishments depute Inexperienced/trainee doctors for critical surgery or for administering medicines for critical diseases during emergencies. In such situations, incidents of unintentional lapse is also can’t be ruled out.

Violence against doctors has become a common phenomenon across the globe. India is not an exception to this angry mentality of relatives and friends of patients. Unfortunately, very few doctors are trained to handle such situations at workplace. In several cases, assets of hospitals are damaged in the process of display of public anger.
