Your greenhouse guide to A fruitful summer

I'm not sure there are many things better in life than opening a greenhouse on a mid-summer's morning and being hit with the aroma of ripe tomatoes. I love to take a moment and breathe it in, and am instantly transported back to times spent in my Nan's greenhouse as a kid.

Over the years, my little protected growing space has also become a kind of retreat, and it opens up a world of edibles, with even a small greenhouse making it easy to grow favourites such as tomatoes, chillies or cucumbers. It's a great place to raise fruit and vegetables from around the world that taste as they should - absolutely packed with flavour. It's also a super way of extending the growing season by months.

All you need for success with greenhouses is a little know-how on what and when to sow, grow and harvest, plus some general care and maintenance advice. I love my greenhouse, now such a part of my gardening routine that it bookends the start and finish of my day. During this time, I get so much done, including some necessary pottering of course, and a bit of trying the produce. I think any harvest from the greenhouse is best eaten fresh. Hands up to eating most of my tomatoes while in the greenhouse, working!

We love June

We're cruising towards midsummer: this is a month full of love and abundance. Wherever you look there will be something in your garden that lifts the spirits and makes you glad to be alive. We have colour to cheer us, we have leaves that still have the bounce and freshness of small puppies, we have the first berries fattening up, there are birds frantically parenting very demanding broods of chicks, the bees are all over the place, it's prime barbecue and picnic season, and we have lawns as lush and green as billiard tables. What a month to fall in love.
