A true-life drama explores the shocking police shooting of an innocent man

Mistaken identity

On 22 July 2005, at Stockwell Underground station in London, the police shot dead Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes after they wrongly believed he was a terrorist.

imageNow, two decades on, Disney+'s powerful factual drama Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, penned by Jeff Pope (The Reckoning), explores the lead-up to the death of the innocent 27-year-old and the complex aftermath of the police's terrible blunder.

'My initial thought was that it was a tragic accident. However, as I dug into it, I realised how much I had swallowed disinformation,' reveals Pope, 63, who was able to speak to de Menezes' family and key figures involved with the case.

'The surveillance operation that ended in Jean Charles' death was poorly executed and there was obfuscation and denial by the Met.

The drama reveals what happened. This is a series about the truth.'
