“How dark are you willing to go?” asks the protagonist of The Shrouds, in an early scene. The question should probably be posed to anyone in line for tickets to David Cronenberg’s latest.
Though the father (grandad?) of the body horror subgenre is now 82 years old, he’s showing no signs of mellowing when it comes to which dark corners he’s willing to explore. The Shrouds - like Crimes Of The Future before it - reassures us that the Cronenberg of 2025 has fundamentally the same concerns as he did in the late-'70s. This is Cronenberg at his most Cronenbergian, poking at taboos like a surgeon probing an open wound.
