Help your links get straight to the point within a web page

- Alex Blake

Copy text as a shareable web link

When you send a web link to another person, you might want to draw their attention to a particular sentence or passage. Usually, that might involve posting the web address and telling your recipient where to scroll to. It’s clunky, inaccurate, and far from optimal. Surely there's a better way?

imageThankfully, there is, and it’s built right into many of the most popular web browsers. Instead of telling people where to look in the web links you send, you can get the web page to not only automatically scroll to the correct place, but also highlight the relevant text, making it easier than ever to show people what you want them to see.

This functionality is called ‘Scroll to Text Fragment’, and it was first introduced by Google in its Chrome browser in 2020. Apple followed suit in 2024, and now all Chromium-based web browsers - plus Safari - can use it. Unfortunately, that means that if you're using a different web browser (such as Firefox), you'll need to install an extension, but we've covered that in step 6 of this tutorial.
