The legendary slugger opens up about fatherhood, family and his next chapter
-
During his 20-year career playing shortstop for the New York Yankees, former team captain and five-time World Series champ Derek Jeter shattered multiple records and earned himself a reputation as one of the best baseball players of all time. (He was inducted into the Baseball of Hall of Fame in 2020, six years after he retired.) But the celebrated athlete, 48, says the challenges of fatherhood threw him for an unexpected loop. "I always valued and prided myself on being prepared, but you can't prepare for parenthood," admits Jeter, who shares daughters Bella, 5, Story, 4, and River, 15 months, with his model wife of six years, Hannah, 32. "You've got to make mistakes like everyone else and just roll with it." The newly anointed MLB sports announcer opens up about embracing his #GirlDad status, his new partnership with Jeep, and why he doesn't miss being out on the field.
Three girls at home! They must keep you on your toes.
DJ Well, my heels too! I'm on my toes and my heels. [Laughs.]
What's your biggest parenting challenge at the moment?
DJ Patience. You have to be very patient because - especially at [their] ages - they don't necessarily understand everything and they ask a lot of questions.
Any advice for new dads?
