The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh meet the royals and enjoy a sumo match in Japan

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh sampled Japanese culture and traditions during a four-day tour of the country their first joint visit to the island nation.

Edward and Sophie's packed schedule included meeting Japan's royal family, touring a Buddhist temple and watching a sumo-wrestling match.

The trip to Tokyo and Osaka - which Edward, 61, and Sophie, 60, carried out on behalf of the duke's brother the King - was designed to celebrate shared values and links between Britain and Japan in areas that included education, innovation, youth opportunities and women's leadership. It also supported the U.K.'s presence at Expo 2025, which is being hosted in Osaka.
