The King takes a decisive step away from Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson ahead of the Royal Family's festive reunion

A SEASON OF RECKONING

Every December, the sight of Sandringham bathed in winter sunlight is a familiar symbol of royal togetherness.

Yet this year's Christmas gathering may look a little different. According to the Times, King Charles has made the difficult decision to keep the Duke and Duchess of York "on the periphery" of the family's famous festive celebrations – a quiet but decisive act in a season that has long symbolized unity.

The move follows fresh revelations that have reignited controversy around the couple's long-ago ties to Jeffrey Epstein. An email from Sarah, Duchess of York – written to Epstein in 2011 and newly reported last month – reveals that she addressed the disgraced late financier as a "supreme friend" just weeks after publicly distancing herself from him.

The duchess's spokesperson has since said the note was written under pressure after she received "prolific threats" from Epstein at the time, but the unwelcome missive has nonetheless placed her and Prince Andrew back under intense scrutiny. And with the Royal Family's annual Christmas gathering fast approaching, the King's stance, sources say, is driven not by anger but by duty – a desire to protect both family and institution from further turmoil while maintaining compassion for all involved.

It also marks the culmination of months – even years – of gentle course correction. From financial adjustments to subtle shifts in visibility, the monarch has steadily drawn clear lines around his brother's role.

"King Charles had really done almost all he could to, as it were, sideline Prince Andrew," royal biographer Robert Hardman tells Hello! Canada. "There is not much more he could do. He has cut off his personal allowance and made it clear that he would like Andrew to move out of the [30-room] Royal Lodge on the Windsor Castle estate into a smaller residence. It's pretty hard to do any more than he has."
