Addiction Recovery Is More Than Sobriety: Rebuilding Health, Habits & Life!
UNIQUE TIMES
|June - July 2026
Every year, June 26 is observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, commonly known as World Drug Day.
Established by the United Nations, the day highlights the impact of substance abuse on individuals, families, and communities, while emphasizing the importance of prevention, treatment, and recovery.
While World Drug Day focuses primarily on illicit drugs, the challenges of addiction extend far beyond narcotics and include alcohol and tobacco, which contribute substantially to health concerns. For many people, substance use is a way of coping with stress, boredom, social pressures, trauma, or unresolved psychological issues. Hence, simply removing substance without dealing with the underlying reasons is not useful.
Also, it is important to understand that sobriety may be the beginning of recovery, but it is not the destination. Lasting recovery requires more than avoiding a substance. It involves rebuilding physical and mental health and developing healthier coping mechanisms to deal with stress or boredom.
Addiction is more than just a weak willpower
Addiction is a chronic condition in which a person continues to use a substance despite knowing that it is causing harm to their health, relationships or work. It is not simply a matter of weak willpower or poor self-control. The repeated use of substances alters the way the brain functions, making it increasingly difficult for a person to stop, even when they genuinely want to. This is why, just educating the person about the health impacts and telling them not to consume alcohol or use tobacco, is not enough!
