Major concern over red meat industry’s future

"Handled with care for confident consumption" was the theme of the 31st conference and congress of the Red Meat Abattoir Association (RMAA), held earlier this year at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West. Several key issues were discussed at the conference, including animal health — particularly foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) — biosecurity, traceability, the development of a tracking and trading system, and residue monitoring.
Niel Venter, chairperson of the RMAA, expressed concern over the current state of the red meat industry, specifically in relation to FMD. "We are all anxious about what's currently going on and what the future holds for our businesses, employees, and industry as a whole. We need a de-risked environment for the industry to survive and thrive. While achieving this is no small task, there is a clear willingness among role-players and government to collaborate," Venter said.
FMD - think innovatively
Dewald Olivier, chief executive officer of Red Meat Industry Services (RMIS), stated that they, in collaboration with other key industry stakeholders, were drafting a proposal for submission to government. "It is essential that we present a clear, actionable plan and then request government support to help ensure the long-term sustainability of our industry," he said.
Commenting on the FMD challenge, Olivier emphasised the need for innovative thinking. “We must rethink our approach to FMD in South Africa. Addressing this disease requires fresh, out-of-the-box solutions. RMIS is working closely with a network of 40 veterinarians who are offering expert input into a proposal for the directorate: animal health. This document is intended to initiate meaningful dialogue between the department and RMIS.”
Olivier highlighted vaccine availability as one of the industry's most pressing challenges. “We have to wait far too long for vaccines. That has to change. South Africa needs to produce its own vaccines,” he said. “The goal is not to dictate to government, but for the industry to present a clear, actionable plan that can guide and support government efforts. “It’s about collaboration - not taking over.

Feedlot finishing phases and tips
Fattening cattle is an important way for producers to add value to their calf crop. However, before deciding to finish cattle, producers should carefully evaluate market conditions and feed costs, as these factors influence the profitability of the operation. This is particularly important for producers who consider this a seasonal activity rather than a permanent component of the farming operation.

The dynamic dairy goats of Modderaskolk
Farming may appear simple from the outside, but behind the scenes it is not always as romantic and idyllic as one might think. Sometimes a farm must be built from the ground up. Whatever the situation, there is a way if you set your mind to it.
