30 YEARS IN COMMAND WITH GEARBULK, NORWAY - ELITE MARINERS

Capt. Kapil Aneja Master Mariner

What are some effective strategies you have used to build cohesive teams and overcome cultural differences?

It is extremely important for the Master to be able to overcome cultural variations amongst the crew and ensure a harmonious working environment where all crew members get fair treatment and feel a sense of belonging on board.

I have always encouraged clear communication, empathy and understanding amongst crew members of varying backgrounds. I go all out to have an open dialogue with my crew irrespective of their nationality or cultural background. My regular meetings are used to define common goals and expectations in simple language. I hold discussions with crew members and encourage suggestions and feedback from everyone on board. These suggestions are then implemented if found useful and that way I can achieve continuous improvement in safety and productivity and in building teamwork and professionalism.

I am a big believer in crew bonding and relaxation and hence I organise regular parties with plenty of fun and games and a mouthwatering elaborate menu. The fun and games during parties help to build collaboration, bonding, and team spirit amongst crew members of diverse cultural backgrounds. In a multicultural environment, I recognise and encourage celebrating different festivals and national days thus sharing traditions and customs.

I remain available for any dispute amongst the crew and try to solve the problem at the earliest with empathy and fairness and by hearing both sides of the issue without bias. I mentor new young cadets who may be homesick by talking with them as a parent would.

I encourage continuous learning amongst crew members and welcome fresh ideas and innovations from the crew irrespective of their rank, race, or nationality with a view to build a cohesive team on board and achieve operational excellence.

WHERE THE SEA MEETS LUXURY DELHI NCR MARINERS EXPERIENCE BRANDED LIVING

On a cool evening recently in Gurgaon, the seafaring fraternity of Delhi NCR anchored at the elegant Westin Residences, graciously hosted by Capt Rahul Srivastava & supported by Capt. Vikas Wasudev. The atmosphere was enchanting — live piano notes drifted like soft sea waves, and couples arrived to be greeted by the warmth and camaraderie that only seasoned seafarers share.
