South Africa’s offshore oil and gas sector is drawing renewed interest as global energy players seek new frontiers amid the energy transition.

French oil giant TotalEnergies is leading the charge, with plans to begin drilling in 2026—pending regulatory approval. “We're hopeful that, once we get the necessary permits, drilling can commence next year,” said Mike Sangster, Senior Vice President for Africa, during an industry conference in May.
