Salmon farming could halt in Tasmania to protect rare fish species

The salmon farming industry could be completely halted in Tasmania due to the decline of the Maugean skate, said the Australian federal environment ministry.

Minister Tanya Plibersek said that the skates, a species of fish, were only found in the Macquarie Harbour in Tasmania and their numbers have been dropping due to low-oxygen levels, which may be caused by salmon farming, hydro-operations and climate change. The Maugean skate, also known as the Port Davey skate, is a species of fish that belong to the ray family. The skate, which is endangered, can only thrive in Tasmanian waters.
