‘Policymakers must act to save SA’s rivers’

South African rivers will become “fairly useless” over the next decade due to pollution if the scientific community cannot convince policymakers and water users to handle waste water responsibly.

This warning came from Dr Stephan Woodborne, a researcher at iThemba LABS, who spoke during the 11th Oppenheimer Research Conference held recently in Midrand, Gauteng.
“The 2022 Green Drop Report suggests that most wastewater in South Africa, irrespective of the affluence of the region, is discharged into rivers with little to no pretreatment,” he told Farmer’s Weekly.
While the mining industry contributed significantly to water pollution, Woodborne’s research indicated that agricultural pollution played a fairly minimal role.
