Earth observation takes centre stage with NASA-ISRO collaboration

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made clear the purpose of its upcoming joint mission with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) the Synthetic Aperture Radar (NIS AR) satellite.

Addressing concerns, IS RO chief S Somanath emphasised that NISAR is not designed for surveillance but for studying the Earth's response to climate change and promoting sustainability.

Talking to media persons following the triumphant launch of the GSLV-F14 INSAT3DS satellite, Somnath said, "The next mission of GSLV (rocket) is going to be the NISAR mission- the NASA-IS RO Synthetic Aperture Radar mission, which is a very big satellite. The configuration and capability of the rocket has been steadily increasing in terms of payload capability as well as volume which is going to be extremely useful", he said.
