HOW HDFC BANK IS REIMAGINING ITS DIGITAL ECOSYSTEMS

Anjani, you've had a unique career arc — from consulting to telecom, and now leading digital at India's largest private sector bank. Looking back, how has this journey shaped the way you define success at HDFC Bank, and what are you most proud of?

Historically, trust in banking was built on three factors: distribution, service, and safety. Did your bank have enough branches? Could you access it when needed? And was your money safe?

In the digital era trust is built through (i) availability, (ii) customer experience, (iii) data intimacy and (iv) security. First one is availability — banks must be always-ON. That requires immense investment in resilient infrastructure — disaster recovery and active-active infrastructure for real-time replication.

The second is customer experience. If banking journeys require complex manual work or multiple clicks and navigation, we have already failed. The expectation is that account opening, money transfer or a change of address should be as simple as ordering food online or watching a film online.

The third is data intelligence. With frameworks like account aggregator, consent-based sharing allows seamless credit underwriting or product issuance. Data must work for the customer, not only the other way around. Customers should feel that "my bank knows me".

Finally, security. Banks are custodians of not just citizens' wealth, but also their deeply private data. We safeguard data in motion and at rest, and are now moving towards encryption even when data is in use.

So, pride comes not from just building digital apps, but from creating a 360-degree digital ecosystem that customers trust — one that is always on, intuitive, data-smart, and secure.

You spoke about resilience and scalability. Can you elaborate on how the bank has built capacity for growth while staying ahead of customer expectations?
