Greyfin is a 2015 Antares 8. She has a 200hp Nanni inboard diesel engine with a simple shaft drive and I don't hold back on maintenance. Over the winter layup, I not only had the usual full winterisation service done but I also replaced the drive shaft, cutlass bearing and stern gland due to signs of wear. Even so, in last month's magazine, I described how what appeared to be a minor inconvenience rapidly came to a head with full engine failure, resulting in a rescue by the RNLI. Keen to uncover the cause of the breakdown, I tasked my local boatyard with rooting out the problem.
