IS THERE ANYTHING better than doing a long road trip with a bunch of mates in some old cars? Especially if it's across the Channel, where the ever-present threat of a breakdown adds an underlying frisson of tension to the regular mickey-taking, café stops and general novelty of travelling through countries in which the landscape and every single detail of towns and villages are subtly different. So, when friend and Octane contributor Matt Howell proposed a boys' trip to Spa circuit for the Six Hours classic racing weekend, I was quick to put my hand up.
The Mustang is absolutely perfect for journeys like this, being relaxed, reliable and as rakish a steed as you could wish for. In my opinion, at least.
On a bright and sunny Friday morning, our four musketeers rendezvoused at Dover ferry terminal. Besides the Mustang, Matt was in his mildly souped-up 1968 VW Beetle, while Damon and his colleague Aaron shared Damon's VW Fastback - also a '68 - making up a miniature So-Cal convoy that drew favourable comments from the nice lady in Passport Control.
