THE DISCUSSION AROUND this year's 10Best Trucks competition had some editors wishing the award were called 12Best.

SINCE WE APPRECIATE GREAT TALENT IN ALL ITS FORMS, WE ALSO HONOR THE 10BEST TRUCKS, SUVS, AND VANS. INCLUDING ONE WINNER WITH LITERAL BUZZ.

The crop of excellent family (or whatever) haulers grew by leaps and bounds, while last year's winners, including some models that are getting quite old, aged gracefully. The need for nanometer-scale scrutiny has never been higher.

Thankfully, we have a great evaluation process in place-the exact same one we use for cars, in fact. After two long weeks of driving everything new that's not a car around our evaluation loop and creating roostertails on dirt roads, we settled on the 10 vehicles that best fulfill their intended mission while still being a joy to drive.

imageThe Porsche Macan's logbook contained more superlatives than any other. Porsche didn't have an electric Macan for our test, but the gas version did fine on its own. And it may be nearing the end of the line, which led to almost every editor treating the logbook like a guestbook at a funeral. We may have even spotted some dried tears on the page.

Chin up, gang. Porsche says the gas-powered Macan will stick around through 2026. That's great news, as the Macan provides some of the most engaging dynamics of any SUV. The steering is tight and full of feedback, the GTS's 434-hp twin-turbo V-6 absolutely scoots, and the body still looks beautiful even though it dates to 2015.

The Macan is better at being a car than some sedans are, plus tossing a few lacrosse bags in the back is easy-although we'll acknowledge that the cargo hold isn't the biggest, and the back seat is far from the roomiest. We'll truly miss the internal-combustion Macan once it sails over the horizon and its electric successor takes over entirely, but we're sure Porsche knows exactly how good the upcoming EV must be to live up to the lofty expectations its forebear has set.
