FOUR DECADES HAVE PASSED, GIVE OR take, since Volkswagen Golf GTI owners in the States started bolting on Koni shocks, Monza dual tip exhausts, and Kamei body kits. (Not to mention adding Fittipaldi steering wheels, Blaupunkt Berlin stereos, and Escort radar detectors by the score.)

No doubt, the Vee Dub tuning community has grown a bit since then. MKVIII GTI owners enjoy a bounty of bolt-ons that make a 1980s aftermarket catalogue look sparser than the Five Guys menu. But how to choose the right gear? What if you just bolted on everything?
