Incremental improvements for sixth iteration of countryside favourite

- STEVE CROPLEY

SUBARU FORESTER

The new sixth-generation Subaru Forester may be closely related to the previous model, but it has been improved in eye-catching ways.

At present, this large SUV takes around 30% of Subaru UK's 2400 annual sales, being very much the choice of traditionalists seeking rugged and dependable transport. By the end of 2026, it will be a key part of a six-strong model line-uphalf of those electric - with more to come as the Japanese brand endeavours to grow here.

imageThere are three iterations of the Forester, all well equipped and now with names to match other Subarus. The entry-level Limited (heated and electrically adjustable seats, 360deg cameras, 18in alloy wheels) starts at £38,995 £1000 more than before. The Field adds sat-nav, a powered tailgate and a heated steering wheel for another £1445, while the Touring has a sliding sunroof, 19in alloys, heated rear seats and black leather upholstery for £42,995.

Like its predecessor, the new Forester uses the Subaru Global Platform, but judicious changes have been made. It's 10% stiffer in torsion, as a result of beefier suspension mounts and a tougher inner chassis frame, and there's extra soundproofing, notably in the roof, from which Subaru claims a 39% drop in cabin noise.
