GWM Cannon Alpha Ultra PHEV

It was interesting to see that the GWM Cannon PHEV landed right behind the Ford Ranger PHEV in the overall scoring. In fact, it was a close pick between the two hybrids, and it only came down to the Ranger's simplicity and solid build to split them.

The Cannon Alpha is the big brother in the Cannon lineup, and in Ultra trim it comes fully loaded. It was the only ute in this test to offer front and rear locking differentials as standard, giving it unrivalled performance on the rougher tracks, while the cavernous cabin is packed with all the features you could ever need - and a few you didn't know you needed.

The Cannon scored well in the Breaking Ground and Doing the Job criteria, but fell behind in Bushability. This was due to some of the off-road functions being a bit complex, and the calibration of the ETC feeling a little jerky, meaning the big GWM needed its lockers to get over the offset wombat-hole obstacles smoothly. There's no doubt its hefty weight didn't help the Cannon's off-road performance.
