MERCEDES-BENZ's head of design GORDEN WAGENER talks about his approach to designing the brand's new EV RANGE, now available in SA.
BEING A CAR DESIGNER CAN'T BE AN EASY JOB.
A bit like being a furniture designer, there are some pretty strict parameters that limit one's creativity. Think about it: four wheels or legs are preferable; both require a degree of safety-ensuring structural integrity; and both need to accommodate a squishy organism with a bum, torso and four limbs. Plus, if you're designing cars, you have to deal with the laws of physics, and the actual law too - stuff like aerodynamics and pedestrian safety. All of this determines the basic silhouette.
Accommodating this, and still coming up with something distinctive, is the mark of a great designer. Which is where Gorden Wagener comes in. As the head of design for Mercedes-Benz, it's his job to make sure his cars stand out from everything else with four rubber wheels, a steering wheel and a hooter. His solution? A design philosophy called Sensual Purity.
