In the middle of Mumbai, a small apartment dials down the noise and gets the details spot on
-
PROJECT: Muted Tones; ARCHITECTS: Jetsons
Somewhere in Ghatkopar, Mumbai, wedged between noise, neon boards and the city’s everyday scramble, a compact 850 sq. ft. apartment quietly holds its own. Home to a young working couple and their child, the design balances modern contemporary aesthetics with a deep reverence for Indian textures, patterns and materials. Designed by the team at Jetsons, the walls tune out the city’s constant clamour, forming a comforting refuge, something to return to after a long, overfull day.
Teak is the first thing you notice. It starts at the entrance, main door, shoe cabinet, credenza and continues inside, tying one corner to the next without pulling focus. The living area picks up from there. A tiled insert on the floor, bottle green and off-white, shaped like an oval rug, outlined in brass, anchors the seating zone. It’s a detail that doesn’t raise its voice, but it stays with you.The furniture sits low and easy. A generous sofa, two accent chairs and solid teak wood tables with birch plywood legs and brass edging. The wall behind the television holds a floating unit and open shelving, finished in the same teak veneer. A matte black MS pipe structure climbs up to the ceiling. There's no attempt to soften it.
