Rich narratives unfold on the sgraffito-adorned ceramic works of Vicky Lindo and Bill Brookes

Vicky Lindo was working at the Burton at Bideford Art Gallery and Museum, in a port town in southwest England, when she fell in love with North Devon slipware. The institution had acquired a collection of pots, plates, and more from the late 1700s to the early 20th century. "They're quite rustic and self-taught," Lindo explains of the vessels, which were often made by farmers and fishermen in the surrounding villages. "Here, there are two rivers—one has white clay and one has brown. So they'd use the white clay as the decoration over the brown."
