You're Kidding - welcoming baby goats into the world

As a sanctuary, Buttercups does not breed goats. However, this does not mean that we never have kids born! Such an event occurred recently, when no less than five pregnant pygmy goats arrived into our care.

THE PREGNANCY

If you suspect your goat to be pregnant, the first thing to do is consult your vet – they will be able to confirm through the use of an ultrasound. They are also likely to guide you toward a rough due date, which will be 150 days (give or take two or three) after conception, as well as the number of kids the doe is expecting (this is usually between one and three). From there, it is a simple game of keeping the mother-to-be fed whilst you both wait patiently for the arrival. You will need to increase her rations as things develop (she is now eating for two to five after all!). At Buttercups, we have found the best way to do this is with multiple, smaller portions throughout the day.
