Belinda Turner of Stubbing Court Training on being inspired by Bill Gates, placing apprentices with top riders and her pride in famous alumni
I grew up in Chesterfield where we always kept horses at home. My granny Brenda Gillespie and mother Felicity Turner hunted and evented, and I started competing from the age of three and hunting with the Barlow aged six.
I studied English at Durham University and rode in the university's equestrian team, and the British Universities team competing all over Europe on some fantastic horses. I became equestrian chair of the then British University Sports Association (later known as the British Universities and Colleges Sport) organising events including the British University Games and the Great Britain University Nations Cup.
Ian Stark is a friend and because of the organising experience I'd gained, when he became the cross-country course-designer at Chatsworth he suggested I join the event's organising team. I've now been involved with Chatsworth for more than 20 years.
This also led to me assisting with the 2005 eventing Europeans at Blenheim under Mike Etherington-Smith, and being involved with the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where I got an insight into the build-up, test event and logistics.
