Skye Terrier A Fashionable Companion

|Jul-Aug 2023
Once a sign of royalty, always by the side of his Duchess, the Skye Terrier is today a lovable pet. He's also known as a vermin-buster, multi-talented is this breed
-
Distinctive is the word to best describe the Skye, recognised by the American Kennel Club back in 1887. Elegant and sturdy, loyal and determined, the breed is a winner all round, but mind you, he's got a mind of his own.
ORIGIN: When the farmhands on the remote Isle of Skye in Great Britain wondered about the best way to rid their land of vermin, a terrier which was low to the ground with a tough disposition and keen nose was developed. Hence, the term 'earth dog' for the Skye Terrier, who stands about 9-10 ins. above the ground. This was in the 1600s. The popularity of the badger and fox hunter, however, only grew in the late 1800s when Queen Victoria set it apart as the royal dog and not a single Duchess in Britain would be seen without one by her side. In fact, it was considered a sort of travesty if you were without one. Fashionable, that's what the Skye Terrier came to be.

The Enchanting Kingdom of Animals The Time Has Come
As a reader of this column you know that I lost both my dogs within 18 months of each other. So since the last 20 months I have lived by myself, dogless, and in a vacuum of grief, something which never really leaves you. It's strange really, not to be able to express the pain to anyone for you don't want to make those around you uncomfortable. They have moved on... however close to you they may be, they won't understand the feeling. Inshy and Tasha, barring for one or two, or just very few, are a forgotten lot.
