Calcium
Calcium is the most widespread mineral in the body and it helps to maintain healthy blood vessels and strong bones. It is a good nutrient to ward away diabetes, calcium lowers risk of type 2 diabetes and it also reduces the uneasiness of mood swings of PMS related depression. Women are at a higher risk of suffering from calcium deficiency compared to men and it is hence important for women to ingest a required dose of calcium.
The good sources of calcium are:
1 cup frozen kale (179mg), 1 cup 1 per cent low-fat milk (304mg), 3/4th cup (310mg) low fat or plain yogurt and 1 cup (357mg) collard greens.
Chromium
Chromium is a trace mineral found in the body, but it plays a major role in metabolism and preventing the onset of diabetes. Insufficient intake of this nutrient interferes with the body’s insulin regulating capacity and can, therefore, increase the risk of complications relating to diabetes such as high blood pressure and loss of vision. Chromium increases the level of neurotransmitters serotonin, melatonin and norepinephrine in the brain. These neurotransmitters help in elevating mood.
