Spurs v Leicester

What does the name Leicester City stir in the memory of club historian John Fennelly? We find out.

AT THE BACK POST

1 BERT BLISS

Our first ever top-level meeting with the Foxes came in the first round of the FA Cup in January 1914. They were then known as Leicester Fosse and would not become City until five years later.

It was not a great season for either club. We would avoid relegation by four points with Leicester re-elected when they finished in the bottom three of Division Two along with Lincoln City and Nottingham Forest.

After an amazing 5-5 draw at Filbert Street we won the replay 2-0 with Fanny Walden and Bert Bliss on target. Bliss also scored twice in the first game along with Walden again plus goals from Billy Minter and Jimmy Cantrell.

Claude Stoodley bagged a hat-trick for the home side with Sam Currie and Francis Mortimer netting singles.

2 JIMMY HOLMES

Jimmy Holmes was one of the most likeable Spurs players I have ever had the pleasure to interview. And with better luck, he could have been up there with some of the best to grace White Hart Lane.

He was a real Spurs player. A ball playing full-back who also created so much, especially when he switched to sweeper, and whose optimism and love of life and football shone through.
