Before PSVR brought more affordable immersive gaming to us all on PS4 (never mind PSVR2 and PS5), PlayStation 2 witnessed the birth of Eye Toy. It might seem quaint now, but in 2003 that little camera left us open-mouthed at the possibilities it offered for a new era of gaming.
We plugged in our cameras and waited patiently for the glowing dots to dance away on the home screen, not truly knowing what was in store. Little did we know that Eye Toy would put us in the driving seat literally. The idea of using our own bodies to control the game was revolutionary. It may have been superseded, but we still have a soft spot for it, so here are the games you shouldn't miss revisiting if you dig yours out for a play session.
EyeToy: Play
FORMAT PS2/PUB SCE/DEV LONDON STUDIO / RELEASED 2003
01 Packaged with Eye Toy, Play was PlayStation's first trip into augmented reality. Voiced by impressionist Jon Culshaw and demonstrated by a dancing nan, the comedic video introduction briefs you on how to get started, step into the silhouette, and get ready to begin. With 12 games and a cast of characters to play alongside, all in a style reminiscent of Jamie Hewlett's art, it's undoubtedly the most memorable. Nostalgic minigames will have you washing windows in Wishi Washi and putting fast-moving pandas in their place in Kung Foo, playing solo or with your mates.
