TULIPS ‘PERFECT FIT' FOR MARCUS
The Non-League Football Paper
|May 23, 2021
SPALDING United boss Gaby Zakuani says shock new signing Marcus Maddison is “hands down” the best player in NonLeague football.
Maddison, 27, scored 62 goals in 240 games for League One Peterborough United and was consistently linked to big-money moves during his six years at London Road.
But after disappointing spells at Hull (loan), Charlton and Bolton (loan), the winger sensationally quit professional football in April, saying the “abuse, pressure and motonony” of life in the spotlight had left him broken.
Now Zakuani – who captained Maddison at Peterborough – has persuaded his old friend back onto the grass in what represents a spectacular coup for the NPL Midlands side.
“We all know he’s got the ability to play in the Championship,” said Zakuani, who took charge of the Tulips in October. “It’s only a year ago he was touted for a big, big move.
“His quality is not in question here – what we need to do is keep him happy. It’s a case of looking after his mental health and maybe there will be tough days.
