In a year of shocking celebrity breakups, Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts’ sudden split — which they deemed “the best way forward for us as a family” in a Sept. 26 announcement — still managed to bewilder. The couple of 11 years, parents to sons Sasha, 9, and Samuel, 7, had the sort of low-key romance rare among A-listers. But their enduring partnership wasn’t what it seemed. Inside sources report that Liev, 49, and Naomi, 48, struggled with distance and rumored infidelities on both sides, and that the breakup was a long time coming. “They’ve been on shaky ground for years,” says an insider, who adds that the pair “managed despite busy schedules, but it was also what kept them from getting married. The kids were the only thing holding them together.”
