The Huang Dynasty
New Zealand Listener|March 16-22, 2019

A novel about an Asian family living in a US landscape of excess is fascinating and wickedly funny.

The Huang Dynasty

Kathy Wang wasn’t seeing herself, or her family, in the stories America was telling. Crazy Rich Asians? Sure, but most of that book takes place in Singapore. What Wang wanted was different: “an American tale – just involving Asians”. So she wrote her own.

Family Trust follows a family wound up tense and tight, laser-focused on their individual versions of the American Dream. It’s set in Silicon Valley, in a landscape of It bags and cruise holidays, luxury face creams and billion-dollar windfalls. Affluence, status and microaggressions are all, and Wang lets us deep into her characters’ interior worlds to marvel at the calibrations on crude, constant display.
