As a country that relies so heavily on Ayurvedic practice as a form of nourishment and healing, Indians tend to villainize the use of chemicals. Toxic chemicals enter our bloodstream through various means like consuming food choked with pesticides or applying harmful topicals to the largest organ of our bodies - the skin. Sulphates, phthalates, parabens, mineral oil, oxybenzone (found largely in sunscreens) etc., are some of the toxic chemicals we should avoid in our daily lives. They can wreak havoc on our bodies from causing hormonal imbalances to skin cancer. Most of these compounds are found in today’s beauty and skincare products.

Non-toxic chemicals, however, have multiple benefits which are being reaped by women following a non-toxic beauty regime. Anything and everything in the range of chemicals like water (used in almost all beauty and skincare products) to ones used in making sustainable product packaging can be considered nontoxic. So, don’t be fooled if a company is using fear-mongering techniques to dissuade you from using chemicals. It is practically impossible in this day and age to use products that are completely chemical-free.
