If you’re looking for a craft that will help you unwind, look no further than the art of macramé – this beautiful placemat is the perfect first project

TRY something new

From plant holders to wall hangings, you may well have a few macramé accessories dotted around your home already. Pieces made using this art of knot-tying have a soft, natural texture, and can help to create a boho vibe or a zen atmosphere. And it’s not only calming to look at – it’s a dream to make, too! For many, the repetitive action of knotting has a meditative effect. It’s a versatile skill, as well. Once you have mastered the two knots in this placemat project, then you will be able to produce any number of pretty patterns.

To create a truly mindful moment while working on this project, play some relaxing music, sit in your favourite spot in the garden, or simply enjoy the silence of your home and let your mind focus on the task in hand...

HOW TO TIE a lark’s head knot

1 Fold a length of string or cord in half to create a loop, then place it over a hanger or wooden stick that will accommodate all of the strings in your project.

2 Pull the string up and around the stick and, taking care not to twist the strings, pull both ends through the loop, as shown in picture 2 directly below.
