A Stunning Homecoming

A massive overhaul and the introduction of quirky finds result in a space that perfectly meets the needs of a family after their return from an overseas stint

After almost a decade living abroad, it was time for this family of four to move back to the island city. This decision also meant that they had to move back into their old nest, a 1,700-square feet walk-up apartment on the top floor of a 30-year-old building. However, with two children now, the owners felt that a rework of their home was in order, so that it could cater to their new needs.

The couple called upon local interior design firm UPSTAIRS_ with a clear brief in mind: a comfortable, primarily white, bright and airy space; an exposed, pitch-roofed interior; and a collection of pre-loved furnishings to add personality to the home. Dennis Cheok, Creative Director of UPSTAIRS_, says, “Our response was to consolidate all of that, and unify it all into a neat white volume, inserted with a newly-gutted and whitewashed building shell.”
