Special effectAs impressive as dynamic stone laying patterns can look, they can be pricey. Instead, try painting one on. Interior designer Beata Heuman believes it has the same striking overall impression but the fact that it’s just paint ensures that the finished look feels relaxed. The best method for achieving this involves mapping out the pattern using string and charcoal on a pre-primed floor. Three base colours are then painted one at a time and the veining is added last.

Throw a curveball

If you thought carpets were too trad for you, think again. Add both punch and comfort to your home by sourcing a funky pattern on a cosy wool canvas. Take note from Emily Murray from The Pink House, who used this bold honeycomb design to complement the original features of this loft space by echoing the fireplace moulding, while the timeless monochrome colour scheme keeps the whole vibe thoroughly modern.

Classic touch

Give your floors a vintage look by using octagonal tiles and square insets, like the Montpellier from Karndean Designflooring’s Heritage collection. This neoclassical design nods to history, but its clean lines and contemporary colourways take it firmly into 2020. Plus, unlike original Victorian tiles, luxury vinyl is hard-wearing, waterproof and easy to maintain, making it ideal for kitchens or high traffic areas of the house.

RAISE THE BAR

A custom bar area helps to set the tone and atmosphere when entertaining by allowing guests to congregate in one area and connect with each other. In this project designed by US design studio Alana Marie Interiors, the custom walnut bar also doubles as a privacy screen, helping to zone the space in a practical and elegant way. The slatted panels create beautiful storage nooks for glassware and bar accessories, demonstrating how form and function can be seamlessly integrated.
