A desire to experience real city living was the catalyst for Mette Heiberg, her husband, Ted, and their teenage daughters’ move from the northern suburbs to the heart of Copenhagen in the spring of 2013. The Heibergs were keen to make a new home for their family, but the condition of the 1920s apartment they found meant that doing so was no small undertaking, as Mette, a commissioning editor for lifestyle programmes at Danish TV, recalls. “It was in a very bad state when we bought it – we had to do everything,” she explains. “Among other things, the property had to be completely rewired and we pulled up some of the flooring and laid a new one.”
