Changing spots

The de Havilland Leopard Moth was a three seat, high-wing monoplane development of the Puss Moth, substituting a spruce frame for the progenitor’s metal, and with a more powerful engine. VH-USM was one of the last products of the Stag Lane factory in North London before the move to Hatfield in 1934. On arrival in Australia, it was sold to the owner of a Queensland sheep station and was in constant use until it got slightly damaged in 1952. While waiting for repair, its hangar collapsed on it and it was stored outside. By the time the remains were bought as a restoration project in 1980 all the fuselage woodwork needed replacement, although the wings, tail and most of the metal parts were useable. A very slow rebuild ensued and four years ago it was moved to Britain for completion.
