Back in 2003, four teenagers formed the boy band McFly, taking their name from Michael J Fox’s Back to the Future character, Marty McFly. Their debut album, Room on the 3rd Floor, came out the following year and debuted at No.1.
When their second album Wonderland, released in 2005, also made it to No.1, McFly became the youngest band to have topped the UK album charts twice. The group went on to have seven No.1s, sell more than 10 million records worldwide, and win a BRIT Award in 2005.
But boy bands grow up and in recent years the four members have all excelled in other areas. Harry Judd was Strictly Come Dancing champion in 2011, Dougie Poynter won I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here! the same year, while Danny Jones has been a coach on The Voice Kids since 2017 and Tom Fletcher has written bestselling children’s books. But despite taking a hiatus between 2016 and 2019, the band have never broken up.
Now, the foursome talks candidly about their rise to fame, the pressures of being teenage pop stars, their enduring friendship, and why they took a three-year break in ITV’s new one-off documentary McFly: All About Us.
And in a conference call with TV Times, Tom, 35, Dougie, 32, Danny and Harry, both 34, tell us about their emotional reunion gig, their kids seeing them perform, and the secret to their longevity...
