The 51-year-old revealed he would be concentrating on his burgeoning writing career after his debut crime novel The Thursday Murder Club became an international bestseller.
The mystery, about a group of a four elderly amateur sleuths in a retirement village, is now the third highest-selling hardback novel ever in the UK, with Steven Spielberg's production company snatching up the film rights.
