Like a footballing minnow causing an FA Cup upset, series one of Apple TV+’s feel-good comedy Ted Lasso defied the critics to win a clutch of awards, including a Golden Globe for its star and co-creator Jason Sudeikis.

Set at fictional English Premier League side AFC Richmond, the show centres on an ever-positive American football coach, with no previous experience of the beautiful game, who was brought in to manage the club.

What he didn’t know was that the club’s new owner Rebecca Welton, played by Hannah Waddingham, had hired Ted to spite her cheating husband, the previous owner, and ruin the club.
