Two New TREK Movies on the Way
Well that came out of nowhere. After a couple of years of rumours, dragging their heels and quickly changing the topic whenever anyone raises the subject, Paramount has finally announced not one, but two new Star Trek movies.
Kind of.
Despite various rumblings from J. J. Abrams and assorted cast members, there had been no official word from Paramount (who, lest we forget, actually pay for them) regarding a new movie since the underperforming Star Trek Beyond in 2016. That all changed at CinemaCon - where studios unveil their upcoming projects to industry figures. Paramount CEO Jim Gianopulos announced that the studio are planning two new Star Trek movies in partnership with Skydance Pictures, who co-financed both Beyond and Into Darkness.
Neither film has been officially greenlit by Paramount, but it’s the most promising sign yet that new movies are on the way.
Although Gianopulos didn’t elaborate, the next day it was widely reported that the first film would be directed by S. J. Clarkson, and would reunite the Kelvin timeline cast.
It would be the feature début for Clarkson, who will be the first woman to helm a Trek movie. Although a movie novice, she’s certainly qualified, with her CV including multiple episodes of Jessica Jones, The Defenders, and Orange is the New Black.
The film will reportedly see the return of Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk - an idea first mooted by Abrams prior to the release of Beyond - with a script by Patrick McKay and John D. Payne.
