Amanda Eller knew she was running out of time—and strength—on the afternoon of May 24, as she hobbled over the rocks in a deep ravine, desperately looking for plants to eat so she could stay alive just one more day. After more than two weeks searching for a way out of Maui’s dense Makawao Forest Reserve, the 35-year-old yoga instructor and physical therapist was covered with cuts, bruises and swollen, blistered wounds. “It came down to life and death, and I had to choose,” Eller recalled days later from her hospital bed. “I chose life.”
