A DOWNSIDE TO HOLDING a third-world country passport is that you need a visa to enter most other countries. Next to budgetary constraints, it’s what most people consider when planning a trip abroad.

After a quick check through Google, we narrowed the (very) short list down to two countries of interest. Brazil’s too far away, so Morocco it is.

I went into this trip blind. I don’t think I even googled anything about our destinations. Luckily, our friend lives for this stuff: planning trips and creating itineraries. He said we’d go alpine climbing, that there’d be a trip to the desert, and that it’s a Muslim country, so dress modestly. At least I had an idea of what to pack.

It turns out that blindness can be a good thing because you will manage to just brush off the usual travel disappointments.

You know, those pictures of exotic-looking wares lined up in medinas or souks? Yeah, they don’t really allow you to take pictures unless you buy from them.
