Hundreds of ships, led by the French general Napoleon Bonaparte, sailed from France in May 1798 on a secret mission.
On board were thousands of soldiers and sailors—and 151 scholars. These savants, as they were known in French, included mathematicians, archaeologists, architects, astronomers, naturalists, artists, mining engineers, a chemist, and students, one only 15 years old.
