Your guide to navigating conflict with ease

Dealing with DIFFICULT PEOPLE

Getting along with others is crucial for our everyday wellbeing. But as much as most of us try to avoid personality clashes, there are some types that seem to thrive on conflict.

Kaz Mitchell, a psychotherapist and lecturer at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, says it’s important to recognise that not everyone is bothered by the same behaviours. So if you’re feeling triggered, it could be helpful to examine if there are any underlying reasons why.

“Most of the time, this is unconsciously because of people we have come across in the past,” she explains. “Nevertheless, there are some common behaviours or attitudes that do tend to generate significant challenges for most people.”

OPINIONATED PEOPLE

Mitchell says you can blame social media for the rise of “know-it-all” behaviour.

“People think that because they have seen a meme, read an article or ‘done their own research’ they are a subject matter expert,” she explains.

It could be someone who is spouting an opinion without any expert knowledge. Or they may be a genuine expert who is unaware of how they are making others feel.

“Both types are likely to be condescending towards others who don’t share their opinion,” Mitchell says. “Overbearing, opinionated attitudes stem from a need to be in control. If another person’s viewpoints leave you feeling intimidated, then you’ll know what I mean.”
